The Hello Kitty brand was created in 1974 and has since become a globally known trademark. Hello Kitty has become a fashion diva and pop culture icon, and the best known of many fictional characters.

In May 2008, Japan named Hello Kitty the ambassador of Japanese tourism in China and Hong Kong, two places where the character is exceptionally popular among children and young women. This marked the first time Japan's tourism ministry had appointed a fictional character to the role.

The brand has generated over $6 billion in annual retail sales globally with Hello Kitty outselling High School Musical by 10% at its peak in M&S confectionary.

1st November 2009 represented the 35th anniversary of the Hello Kitty brand. The Hello Kitty Mac, launched in March 2009, had a 60% sell through in the first week, whilst the brand receives exposure in a range of offline media including Vogue, Grazia, Elle, Marie Claire, Look, Closer and Heat magazine.
